Chile has officially unveiled Latam-GPT, the region’s first large-scale open-source language model designed specifically for Latin America and the Caribbean. This initiative aims to provide tools that better understand the local contexts, identities, and languages of the region.
The model, set to debut in June, has been developed in collaboration with Brazil and other Latin American countries, and seeks to compete with well-established technologies such as ChatGPT and Gemini. Chile’s President Gabriel Boric highlighted the importance of creating digital tools that resonate with local cultures during the launch event.
Latam-GPT is backed by CENIA and aims to represent the diverse realities of the region by utilizing data from 20 Latin American nations, as well as Spain. This project aligns with public policy initiatives that prioritize education and science as drivers for regional innovation. Analysts view this model as a critical step towards reducing dependency on foreign AI technologies that do not cater to the linguistic and cultural nuances of Latin America.
Moreover, Colombia has joined the initiative as a strategic partner, signaling a commitment to regional cooperation in AI development. Various stakeholders, including academic institutions and technology developers, are expected to contribute to and benefit from this collaborative effort, which is characterized by its openness and accessibility.
