Guadalajara on Lockdown as Violence Erupts After El Mencho’s Death

Residents of Guadalajara have gone into lockdown following the reported death of notorious drug lord Nemesio Oseguera, known as “El Mencho,” in an operation by Mexican military intelligence. The security situation in the Jalisco capital of Guadalajara and neighboring cities, such as Zapopan, has prompted local authorities to advise residents to stay indoors, with many businesses and public events canceled.

Apparently, Mexican authorities intercepted communications between Oseguera and his lover who lived in the area where he was slain. This is likely the capability offered by US intelligence agencies who sought to collaborate and apprehend ‘El Mencho’.

Although, truth be told, there does seem to be an air of suspicion over his death and not arrest. El Mencho was certainly in a position to make explosive claims that are now impossible to access about corruption on both sides of the border.

The operation against Oseguera, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), reportedly led to heightened tensions and violence across the region. General Trevilla of the Mexican Army confirmed that intelligence operations successfully located one of Oseguera’s partners in a wooded area south of Guadalajara, which contributed to the efforts against the cartel’s leadership.

Local residents report a quiet city and urging caution. Posts highlight both concern for safety and hope that the government will take decisive action to restore security, especially in light of Guadalajara’s upcoming role as a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite current turmoil, FIFA has reaffirmed its commitment to maintain Guadalajara as a host venue for the tournament.

In light of recent events, cultural and sporting activities have been affected, with the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) canceling a scheduled lucha libre event in the city due to security recommendations. Some residents expressed relief that an immediate wave of violence had not unfolded, yet many are on edge awaiting the government’s response to potential escalations in cartel activity, as evidenced by various posts on social media platforms.

Security analysts and locals alike remain vigilant, watching the situation unfold in the wake of Oseguera’s death and its implications for safety in Guadalajara and beyond.
